The Meze Audio Empyrean II is a reference open-back planar magnetic headphone built around the Rinaro Isodynamic Hybrid Array® driver with the Rinaro Isoplanar® [MZ3] diaphragm. Compared to the original model, development focused on greater resolution of fine detail and a more neutral tuning, while preserving the original, easy-to-listen-to character of the presentation. The circumaural fit and open-back design make this model ideal for long stationary listening sessions.
The driver has an oval (ovoid) shape measuring 102 × 73 mm with an active area of 4,650 mm², while the diaphragm weighs just 0.16 g and the entire driver 82 g. The hybrid layout of the conductive traces divides the diaphragm area into a section optimised for low frequencies and a section positioned directly over the ear canal for mids and highs. The construction uses a glass fibre-reinforced ABS housing, the acoustic mass reaches 10.7 kg/m⁴ and the headphones weigh 449 g.
An impedance of 32 Ω and sensitivity of 90 dB SPL/mW at 1 kHz allow operation with a wide range of headphone amplifiers. The frequency range of 8 Hz – 110 kHz, harmonic distortion below 0.05 % and maximum SPL above 130 dB translate into a quiet background, precise localisation of instruments within the soundstage and dynamic headroom without compression in loud passages. The low diaphragm mass contributes to fast transient attacks and clearly defined decay.
Connection is handled by a pair of 4-pin mini-XLR connectors and the supplied PCUHD copper cable with a 6.3 mm plug. The package includes two pairs of earpads, among them angled Alcantara pads that influence both tonal balance and comfort, plus a high-strength ABS carrying case with foam inserts and a leather handle.
