Duo Leather-Alcantara Ear Pads: leather and Alcantara® combined to tune Meze headphones

The Duo replacement ear pads are an accessory for Meze headphones, compatible with the Empyrean, Empyrean II and Elite models. They were developed as a solution voiced specifically for the Empyrean II, combining premium genuine leather and Alcantara® in a precisely defined ratio. The result is a shift in the character of the sound that complements the original sonic signature of these headphones with a more contemporary, more open presentation.

The construction is based on a dual-material approach: the inner side is made of perforated genuine leather, while the outer surface combines Alcantara® with genuine leather. The manufacturer tested various ratios of the two materials, since their acoustic impedance and breathability directly influence the damping in the space between the driver and the ear. The outer dimensions are 123 × 95 × 33 mm (±1 mm), with an inner opening of 74 × 45 mm (±1 mm).

Acoustically, the individual materials behave differently. Leather seals the space around the ear more effectively, helping to maintain the weight and body of the bass frequencies. Alcantara®, on the other hand, is more breathable and brings finer detail and greater spaciousness to the presentation, which translates into clearer localisation of instruments. The combination of both materials therefore balances the low end with resolution in the upper registers.

The ear pads are handmade, so slight visual variations may occur between individual pieces. They serve both as a replacement part and as a tool for fine-tuning the sound to the listener's preferences.
