The C-5000 is Yamaha's flagship stereo preamplifier built around a fully balanced, discrete signal path throughout every stage when Tone Defeat is engaged. At the heart of the concept lies a patented floating circuit used in the phono EQ as well as the input and line amplifiers, isolating the signal path from the influence of ground noise. Together with the GT-5000 turntable and the M-5000 power amplifier, it forms a balanced chain from cartridge to loudspeakers, with no need to convert to an unbalanced signal.
The printed circuit boards employ a mirrored folding-book layout, in which the left and right channels are physically identical, including component placement and trace lengths. This arrangement improves channel matching while minimising ground loops when connecting to other components. Power is supplied by two independent toroidal transformers, one per channel, enclosed in a copper-plated housing that suppresses magnetic leakage and vibration — including their effect on the sensitive phono circuit.
The design follows a low-impedance philosophy: the chassis is copper-plated to limit the impact of voltage drops on the circuitry, and the power distribution uses thick, screw-fastened conductors with minimal resistance. The result is a high signal-to-noise ratio (110 dB and above for BAL/LINE), residual noise of 3 µV and channel separation exceeding 110 dB. In practice this translates into precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image, clear rendering of low-level detail and controlled, dynamically uncompressed bass.
The mechanical execution and controls are equally refined. The volume potentiometer with ball bearings and a precisely machined aluminium body offers a defined action, while the lever switches have been reworked for more accurate operation. The unit stands on solid brass feet, which can be used as fully supported spikes or with a protective pad. Connectivity comprises six RCA and four balanced inputs, including phono MM and MC with four impedance settings, a 15 Hz subsonic filter, ±9 dB tone controls and a headphone amplifier delivering 35 mW per channel.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
