Description

Yamaha C-5000: fully balanced preamplifier with floating signal path architecture

The C-5000 is Yamaha's flagship stereo preamplifier built around a fully balanced and discrete signal path in every stage when Tone Defeat mode is engaged. At the heart of the concept is a patented floating circuit used in the phono EQ, input and line amplifier, which isolates the signal path from the influence of ground noise. Together with the GT-5000 turntable and the M-5000 power amplifier it forms a balanced chain from cartridge to loudspeakers, with no need for conversion to an unbalanced signal.

The printed circuit boards employ a mirrored folding-book layout, in which the left and right channels are physically identical, including component placement and trace lengths. This arrangement improves channel matching while minimising ground loops when connecting to other components. Power is supplied by two independent toroidal transformers, one per channel, enclosed in a copper-plated housing that suppresses magnetic leakage and vibration — including their effect on the sensitive phono circuit.

The design follows a low-impedance concept: the chassis is copper-plated to limit the effect of voltage drops on the circuits, and the power distribution uses thick screw-fastened conductors with minimal resistance. The result is a high signal-to-noise ratio (110 dB and above for BAL/LINE), residual noise of 3 µV and channel separation of over 110 dB. In practice this translates into precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image, legibility of low-level detail and controlled, dynamically uncompressed bass.

The mechanical execution and controls are equally refined. The volume potentiometer with ball bearings and a precisely machined aluminium body offers a well-defined action, while the lever switches have been reworked for more accurate handling. The unit rests on solid brass feet, which can be used as fully supported spikes or with a protective pad. Connectivity includes six RCA and four balanced inputs, including phono MM and MC with four impedance settings, a 15 Hz subsonic filter, tone controls of ±9 dB and a headphone amplifier delivering 35 mW per channel.

Key features

  • Floating balanced architecture: Discrete balanced circuits in every stage
  • Folding-book PCB: Mirror-identical signal paths for both channels
  • Two toroidal transformers: Separate power supply per channel in a copper housing
  • Low-impedance chassis: Copper plating and thick screw-fastened conductors
  • Phono MM/MC: Four selectable MC impedances and a subsonic filter

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
