Meze 99 Neo – closed-back circumaural headphones with 40 mm dynamic drivers for home and portable listening
The Meze 99 Neo are closed-back headphones with a circumaural design that surrounds the ears, intended for both home and portable use. The sound is delivered by 40 mm dynamic drivers with a frequency response of 15 Hz – 25 kHz and total harmonic distortion below 0.1 % at 1 kHz. The earcups are made of black ABS plastic, which adds durability at a low weight of 260 g.
In terms of electrical parameters, this is an easy load to drive: 26 Ω impedance and 103 dB SPL/mW sensitivity at 1 kHz allow them to be driven properly from a smartphone or portable player, with a recommended power of 30 mW and a maximum of 50 mW. Connection is handled by a dual 3.5 mm TS jack with a detachable braided OFC copper cable, which increases mechanical durability and at the same time allows the cable to be swapped for a different type.
The tuning leans towards a warmer sonic signature with a more pronounced yet controlled bass region, clean midrange and smooth highs without harshness. The closed-back design provides passive isolation, which reduces both the ingress of ambient noise and sound leakage, thereby stabilising the perception of detail at lower volumes. The result is a genre-versatile presentation suitable for both casual and more demanding listening.
Wearing comfort is handled by a self-adjusting headband together with replaceable memory foam earpads, which conform to the shape of the head even when wearing glasses. The package includes a 1.5 m Kevlar OFC cable with microphone and remote control, a 6.3 mm jack adapter, a cable pouch and a hard EVA carrying case.
