Description

Complete 5.2-channel home cinema system with a Yamaha AV receiver, CINEMA DSP 3D and wireless surround

The Yamaha YHT-4960 D is a complete home cinema package that combines a 5.2-channel AV receiver with the NS-P41 speaker set and an active subwoofer. The core of the signal path is a five-channel power amplifier delivering 80 W per channel, complemented by CINEMA DSP 3D processing, which works with measured sound field data from concert halls and music clubs. The video side is covered by 4 HDMI inputs / 1 output with support for 8K/60 Hz, 4K/120 Hz, HDR10+ and eARC, so the system can handle a TV and several sources at once.

The amplifier section is built around a High Slew Rate Amplifier, which responds to rapid changes in input signal level and contributes to accurate, stable transient reproduction. The YPAO calibration system measures the room acoustics and adjusts levels and frequency response to suit the specific space. The ALLM, VRR, QMS and QFT gaming features are available via a firmware update, allowing next-generation consoles to be connected with no compromise in picture smoothness.

The NS-P41 speakers use 7 cm full-range cone drivers — the front and surround models in a bass-reflex design, the centre channel in a sealed enclosure. Their voicing aims at a clear, unforced presentation suited to longer listening sessions, while the handover to the subwoofer is seamlessly matched in frequency. The subwoofer with its 20 cm driver employs Advanced YST II technology, which combines negative impedance and constant current principles for firmer cone control, and a Twisted Flare Port — a twisted port shape that disperses air turbulence at the port edge and reduces noise that is not part of the original signal. The result is bass that extends down to 28 Hz with precise articulation and a stable sound pressure level.

Network features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and the MusicCast multiroom platform, which also enables MusicCast Surround — the surround channels can be replaced by wireless MusicCast 20 or MusicCast 50 speakers. Control is handled through the MusicCast app, installation is made easier by the AV Setup Guide app, and voice control via Alexa and Google Assistant devices is also supported (availability varies by region). The front, centre and surround speakers all have keyhole slots on the rear for wall mounting.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
