The Stage III Concepts Typhon is a reference speaker cable that brings the key design solutions of the flagship A.S.P. Reference series into a lower price bracket. The signal path is built around six cryogenically treated AeroStrandUltra ribbon conductors made of a silver-palladium alloy with an enlarged cross-section — the very same conductor type used in the flagship Medusa. This alloy shows a natural immunity to electromagnetic interference and induced distortion.
The conductors are arranged into three individually shielded twisted pairs with a multi-twist geometry that suppresses induced noise. Each conductor runs inside a thin-walled air tube of high-purity PFA Teflon, so the dielectric is predominantly air. The multi-layer construction includes a mechanically damping and shielding layer of silicate, ceramic and ferrite, enclosed in a soft Tygon polymer damping jacket. The outer ASPIS shield is made of metallised copper and carbonised nylon.
The combination of a low-loss dielectric, thorough shielding and mechanical resonance damping lowers the noise floor and reduces the microphony of the structure. The result is more legible microdynamics, more precise instrument localisation within the stereo image and a smoother presentation compared with traditional shielded designs. The enlarged conductor cross-section also contributes to stable delivery of higher currents during dynamic peaks.
Typhon is built entirely by hand, with no off-the-shelf components. The braid is a hand-woven carbon fibre sleeve. Standard termination consists of cryogenically treated solid silver Hyperion spades designed for high currents; silver-plated beryllium bronze bananas are available as an alternative.
