The Yamaha TT-S303 is an analogue turntable with belt drive and a straight, statically balanced tonearm, designed for playing both classic and contemporary vinyl releases. The design is built around a rigid plinth and a switchable Phono/Line output, which makes the unit usable in a wide range of systems — from classic stereo amplifiers to active loudspeakers.
Drive is provided by a DC motor separated by a belt from the 30 cm die-cast aluminium platter, which reduces the transfer of mechanical motor vibrations to the record. The turntable operates at 33-1/3 and 45 rpm with a deviation of ±2 % and a wow & flutter figure of 0.2 %. The tonearm, with an effective length of 223.5 mm and an overhang of 19 mm, allows tracking force to be set in the 0–4 g range and accepts cartridges weighing 15.5–19 g including the headshell.
An MM-type cartridge with an output voltage of 2.5 mV and a recommended tracking force of 3.5 g is supplied. The integrated phono preamplifier with RIAA equalisation raises the output level to 140 mV, so the turntable can be connected directly to a line input without a separate phono stage. When switched to Phono mode, the signal is routed without equalisation to the amplifier's external phono stage. A signal-to-noise ratio of 67 dB or better contributes to a clean background.
The straight tonearm layout shortens the signal path and, according to the manufacturer, contributes to transparency and openness of presentation; in practice this shows in a legible midrange and stable localisation of instruments within the stereo image. The cabinet, measuring 450 × 136 × 368 mm and weighing 4.8 kg, follows the classic aesthetics of hi-fi components. Power consumption is 1.5 W, and 0.1 W in standby. The output is provided on a single pair of RCA connectors.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
