Description

Yamaha TRUE X BAR 50A soundbar with Dolby Atmos, up-firing drivers and a wireless subwoofer

The TRUE X BAR 50A is an active soundbar with Dolby Atmos decoding, complemented by an external wireless subwoofer with a 16 cm driver. The system delivers a total output of 280 W split between the front channels, the height channels, the built-in subwoofer and the external bass unit, covering films, TV content and music streaming in the living room. True X Surround technology allows a fully wireless expansion into a surround set using True X Speaker 1A speakers (sold separately).

The driver complement includes two 4.6 × 6.6 cm front cone drivers, two upward-firing 5.2 cm height drivers and a pair of built-in 7.5 cm bass drivers. Each channel has its own 30 W amplifier stage, while the external subwoofer runs on 100 W. The cabinet design — from the rear chamber and the specially shaped bass-reflex port to the fabric used on the grille — is tuned with faithful reproduction of fine detail in mind.

The height drivers create the vertical component of the sound field, so objects in a Dolby Atmos mix have a clearly readable position above the TV and the scene gains spatial depth. The separate subwoofer takes over the lowest band and relieves the main unit, which contributes to more stable dynamics at higher volumes. The Clear Voice function improves dialogue intelligibility against dense musical backing, and Bass Extension reinforces the low end. Four modes are available — Stereo, Standard, Movie and Game.

Connection to the TV is handled by HDMI eARC with CEC support and 4K passthrough, with an HDMI input and an optical digital input also on board. The network side offers Wi-Fi, AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect, plus wireless Bluetooth 5.0 (A2DP, SBC/AAC). Control is possible via the remote, the Sound Bar Controller app, by voice through built-in Alexa, or directly with your TV remote.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
