The Yamaha SR-B40A is a two-piece soundbar with a separate wireless subwoofer, designed to expand your TV's sound into a full-fledged surround field. The reproduction chain is built on Dolby Atmos technology, complemented by Yamaha's own sound field processing solution True Sound, and on a total output power of 200 W split between the front channels and the subwoofer.
The central unit works with a driver complement of 4× 4.6 cm cone drivers for the Front L/R channels and 2× 2.5 cm dome tweeters, with each front channel delivering 50 W. The low end is handled by an external subwoofer with a pair of 16 cm cone drivers and a 100 W amplifier, which communicates with the bar wirelessly, so its placement in the room is not tied to cabling. The central unit's cabinet, measuring 910 × 68 × 133 mm, allows it to be placed in front of the TV or wall-mounted using spacers.
Splitting the frequency bands between a separate subwoofer and the bar's wide-range/tweeter section reduces intermodulation strain on the small drivers, which shows in the clarity of the midrange and the stability of the bass line at higher volumes. The Bass Extension function widens the perceived range of the low end, while Clear Voice improves speech intelligibility in passages with dense musical backing and effects. Four surround processing modes are available – Stereo, Standard, Movie and Game – along with new tone control settings via the app, letting you fine-tune the tonal balance without altering the character of the content.
Connection to the TV is handled by a single cable – HDMI with eARC/ARC and CEC support or an optical digital input. Thanks to CEC, the TV remote takes over the basic functions, while more detailed settings are accessible via the supplied remote and the Sound Bar Remote app. Wireless music streaming is provided by Bluetooth 5.1 with the A2DP profile and SBC and AAC codecs, with a range of roughly 10 m with no obstacles. Dolby Digital is supported as well.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
