The Yamaha SPS-5000 is a dedicated speaker stand developed specifically for the NS-5000 bookshelf speakers, with a shape and mass derived from simulation analysis of the structure's acoustic behaviour. The aim of the design is to support the speaker firmly without the stand itself introducing its own resonances or parasitic radiation into the reproduction. The four legs made of solid aluminium feature smoothly rounded surfaces and are set at an angle of 42° relative to the baffle, which reduces sound reflections from the stand's structure.
The total weight of 8 kg, together with the rigidity of the aluminium legs, creates an exceptionally stable foundation with high resistance to vibration, reducing the transfer of vibrations from the cabinet to a minimum. The height of 304 mm including the spikes has been chosen so that the NS-5000's tweeter lies at the ear level of a seated listener; it is taller than conventional stands for 30 cm bookshelf speakers, which at the same time limits early floor reflections.
The stand comes with turned steel spikes that channel unwanted vibrations into the floor. The spikes can be removed and the stand placed on rubber feet depending on the character of the room and the surface. The height adjustment mechanism with spacer washers eliminates rocking and uneven loading, while the supplied special screws allow the speaker to be mechanically coupled to the stand. The result is a stable placement that contributes to more precise localisation of instruments and a more legible bass range.
Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
