The Yamaha SPS-3000 are speaker stands designed exclusively for the compact NS-3000 speakers. Their purpose is to place the speaker at the optimal height and position while providing it with a mechanically stable base. The construction combines a body made of MDF and rubberwood with a thick 6 mm metal plate on the top, which forms the seating surface for the speaker.
The combination of different materials in the stand's body helps to damp resonances, while the metal plate ensures firm and even contact with the bottom panel of the cabinet. The lower section features anti-vibration feet that limit the transmission of vibrations between the stand and the floor. The stand is supplied in versions with and without spikes, corresponding to a height of 648 mm and 629 mm respectively, with a footprint of 306 × 401 mm.
The rigidity of the NS-3000 cabinet is the result of detailed engineering development, and the stand must not degrade it. A weight of 15.3 kg per piece and a rigid mechanical mounting of the speaker reduce unwanted cabinet movement during playback, which translates into more precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image, a more stable bass response and more legible detail.
Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
