Description

Four-tower reference system with a hybrid Lattice tweeter and seven BilletCore drivers

The XV Studio 3 is a 4-way passive floorstanding loudspeaker built as four separate towers — two main and two bass — conceived as a more compact version of the flagship XV model. At the heart of the design is the hybrid YG Lattice tweeter with a 26 mm diameter, joined by seven BilletCore drivers with aluminium diaphragms and the most complex implementation of the Ultracoherent crossover the brand has used to date. The system is intended for installations demanding complete control over both the time and phase domains.

The enclosures are machined from aircraft-grade aluminium in a three-layer structure with constrained layer damping, produced to high precision in the manufacturer's own facilities in Colorado and Cambridge. The tweeter uses an airframe-type supporting structure made from a specially selected aerospace alloy, which contributes to exceptionally low distortion across a wide band and to wide angular dispersion with a larger optimal listening area. The midrange is handled by two 15 cm drivers and three 18.5 cm mid-bass drivers with neodymium motors, while the bass section uses a pair of 26 cm drivers with extremely high flux-density motors.

The third-generation crossover, dividing at 90 Hz, 360 Hz and 1.85 kHz, is optimised for phase matching, phase response and transient behaviour; relative phase stays within ±5° throughout the band where driver output differs by no more than 20 dB. It uses pure metal-foil capacitors, foil resistors and damped inductors with a computationally optimised layout that minimises interaction between components. The result is precise instrument localisation within a wide and deep soundstage, legible micro-detail and consistent timing across the entire bandwidth.

Usable response extends from below 20 Hz up to 40 kHz with low distortion throughout the range and outstanding pair matching. A sensitivity of 88 dB and an average impedance of 4 Ohms with a 3 Ohm minimum call for an amplifier with a stable current output. The weight of 145 kg per main tower and 135 kg per bass tower reflects the massive aluminium construction, which curbs enclosure resonance and aids dynamic stability at high levels.

YG Acoustics

The American company YG Acoustics, founded in 2002, is one of the world’s most highly regarded brands in the category of ultimate high-end loudspeakers. The brand has made a name for itself through its uncompromising combination of computational modelling, cutting-edge science and precision engineering. Unlike most manufacturers, it rejects outsourcing and mass production – it operates its own state-of-the-art CNC facility in Colorado, where it manufactures chassis, its own drivers and the vast majority of precision components from solid blocks of aerospace-grade aluminium. YG Acoustics’ aim is to recreate the magical atmosphere and emotion of a live performance with absolute phase and frequency accuracy.

At the heart of YG Acoustics’ loudspeakers lie unique technologies developed in-house. The patented DualCoherent™ crossovers are the only ones in the world to optimise both a flat frequency response and zero relative phase simultaneously. The drivers utilise BilletCore™ technology for bass and midrange cones milled from a single piece of aluminium, and ForgeCore™ magnetic motors for the tweeters, whilst maintaining zero distortion. The clarity of the sound is complemented by ToroAir™ air dampers to eliminate crosstalk, and the FocusedElimination™ internal design, which removes standing waves without dynamic loss. YG Acoustics loudspeakers are designed for the most discerning listeners who demand absolute transparency, surgical precision and natural musicality without any ‘boxy’ colouration.
