The SC-001 Sonic Cleaning Brush is a cleaning brush for vinyl records whose bristles vibrate at approximately 11,000 oscillations per minute. Instead of passively sweeping the surface, the vibrating bristle drive mechanically loosens even the fine dust settled deep in the groove that an ordinary brush cannot remove. A cleaned groove allows the cartridge to track the modulation without disruptive contamination, restoring the original character of the recording.
The bristle material was not chosen by guesswork, but on the basis of measurements. DS Audio visualised the dust particles on the record surface using highly sensitive cameras and compared the amount of residual dust before and after cleaning. Individual candidate materials were evaluated according to their real dust removal efficiency under actual vibration, and only the one with the highest measured performance – which outperformed the competing brushes in the comparison tests – was adopted for production. The brush head is replaceable.
Records pick up an electrostatic charge as soon as they are pulled out of the sleeve and subsequently during cleaning itself — brushes without an antistatic function reduced the charge only minimally in comparative tests, and in some cases actually increased it through friction. The SC-001 therefore works in two stages: a low-charging bristle material suppresses the build-up of charge at the source, while conductive fibres positioned behind the vibration unit drain away the charge already present on the record. The result is lower dust adhesion after cleaning and less impulse noise during playback.
The design is conceived as a handheld tool powered by two AAA batteries, measuring 129 × 37 × 62 mm and weighing 260 g. The brush thus complements the analogue chain even before the stylus touches the groove, where the true noise level and the legibility of detail are decided.
The Japanese company DS Audio is a true pioneer in the field of modern vinyl record playback. As a specialist division of the development company Digital Stream Corporation, it brings to market unique optical phono cartridges and specialised equalisers. Unlike traditional MM and MC systems, which generate a signal through the movement of a magnet or coil within a magnetic field, DS Audio’s optical cartridges detect the movement of the stylus by measuring changes in the shadow and brightness of an infrared LED and photodiodes. As a result, there is no magnetic resistance, allowing the stylus to move freely, smoothly and with exceptional precision along the record groove. The system’s moving mass is extremely low, resulting in a radical reduction in noise, zero magnetic distortion and a clean, native analogue signal with a vast dynamic range.
DS Audio’s optical technology operates on the principle of amplitude proportionality, achieving an excellent signal-to-noise ratio, a solid bass foundation and incredible detail. The brand’s comprehensive portfolio ranges from more affordable systems right up to the absolute reference class. The company also supplies specially developed phono equalisers for its cartridges, as well as innovative accessories, including ionisers to remove static charge and stylus cleaning systems. DS Audio products are designed for discerning vinyl enthusiasts and audiophiles seeking maximum clarity, dynamics and the definitive technological solution for the analogue signal chain.
