The RX300A is a 5.2-channel AV receiver designed for home cinema, combining Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X surround decoding with up-to-date video connectivity in the form of HDMI 2.1 supporting 4K/120 and 8K/60. Output power reaches 70 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.09 % THD, two channels driven), or 145 W (6 ohms, 1 kHz, 10 % THD, one channel driven), and the receiver also supports bi-amp connection. Besides the classic 5.2 layout with virtual height effects, it allows a 3.2.2 configuration with ceiling or upward-firing speakers.
The design follows the principle that component placement and signal path routing both shape the final performance. A large heatsink sits above the HDMI circuitry, drawing away heat and protecting the sensitive DSP and HDMI stages when switching high-bandwidth signals. Mechanical stability is handled by the A.R.T. Wedge – a fifth, centrally positioned foot adopted from higher Yamaha models; together with the four outer feet it dissipates vibration and contributes to a calmer, more precisely defined soundstage.
Before the first listening session, the supplied measurement microphone is used to run the Room Correction function, which measures the acoustics of the room and the characteristics of the speakers and automatically adjusts the system settings. The result is a more even frequency response, more stable localisation of effects in space and clearer dialogue even in acoustically unfavourable interiors. The Pure Direct, Straight, Movie, Music, All Channel Stereo, 2 Channel Stereo and Night sound modes let you tailor the presentation to the content – from a minimalist signal path for music to a narrowed dynamic range for late-night listening.
Connectivity includes 4 inputs and 1 output of HDMI 2.1 with eARC, VRR, ALLM, QMS and HDCP 2.3, support for HDR10+, Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log-Gamma, two analogue RCA inputs, optical and coaxial digital inputs, USB for playback of MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV files, an FM tuner, two pre-out subwoofer outputs and five screw-type speaker terminals. Bluetooth 5.3 with Multipoint lets you pair two devices and switch between them instantly. Four Scene buttons recall preset combinations of input and sound settings directly from the front panel or the remote control.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
