Yamaha RX-V6A: 7.2-channel AV receiver with CINEMA DSP 3D, Dolby Atmos and HDMI 7-in/1-out

The Yamaha RX-V6A is a 7.2-channel AV receiver designed for home cinema as well as multichannel music playback, built around a combination of Yamaha's own CINEMA DSP 3D sound field processing and the object-based Dolby Atmos and DTS:X formats. The amplifier section delivers 100 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 2 channels driven, 0.06 % THD), or 125 W with a single channel driven. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a Burr-Brown PCM5102A D/A converter with 384 kHz/32-bit resolution, which processes FLAC up to 384 kHz/24-bit, WAV and AIFF up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD up to 11.2 MHz.

The power section is based on a High Slew Rate amplifier that responds to rapid changes in input signal level. Yamaha redesigned the circuitry so that the high slew rate does not come at the expense of transmission stability — something that shows above all with high-resolution signals. The receiver supports bi-amping, a Pure Direct mode that bypasses unnecessary circuitry, adjustable audio delay of 0–500 ms, adaptive dynamic range compression and 17 DSP programmes including Virtual Presence Speaker, Virtual Surround Back Speaker and Dialogue Lift.

Adaptation to room acoustics is handled by YPAO R.S.C. with multi-point measurement, which analyses reflections in the room, corrects speaker parameters and at the same time adjusts the CINEMA DSP settings according to the measured reflected sound. The result is more stable localisation of instruments and dialogue, an even tonal balance and a more accurate blend between channels. The Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer (available via firmware update) simulates height channels even in a system without ceiling or upward-firing speakers — with five channels it replaces a pair of ceiling speakers, with seven channels a set of four. The Compressed Music Enhancer function restores the frequency range lost to compression in formats such as MP3.

The video section offers 7 HDMI inputs / 1 output with support for 4K/120 Hz, 8K/60 Hz, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and eARC, with the latest transmission parameters (24 Gbps) supported on HDMI inputs 1–3. For gaming there are ALLM and VRR, which reduce latency, stutter and screen tearing. Network features include Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth (SBC/AAC), AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and the MusicCast multiroom system, through which MusicCast 20 or MusicCast 50 speakers can be used as wireless rear channels. Also on board are a Phono turntable input, a powered Zone2, 2.2-channel pre-outs, a 12 V trigger, control via the MusicCast app and a web browser, plus the AV Setup Guide installation assistant.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
