The Yamaha RX-A2A AV receiver is a 7.2-channel AVENTAGE series model designed for home cinema, with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding including the Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X surround upmixers. Sound field processing is handled by CINEMA DSP 3D with 17 DSP programs created from measured data of real concert halls and clubs. For systems without ceiling or upward-firing speakers there is Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer, which simulates the effect of two to four height channels using the front and surround speakers.
The amplifier section delivers 100 W per channel (8 ohms, 20 Hz–20 kHz, 2 channels driven, 0.06 % THD), or 125 W at 1 kHz with one channel driven. At its core is a High Slew Rate Amplifier, whose circuit design combines a fast response to steep changes in input level with stable signal transmission, which is particularly beneficial with high-resolution signals. Digital-to-analogue conversion is handled by a Burr-Brown PCM5102A DAC with 384 kHz/32-bit resolution, while file playback extends to FLAC 384 kHz/24-bit and DSD 11.2 MHz. Mechanical stability is supported by the A.R.T. Wedge – a fifth foot in the centre of the chassis, which damps vibrations from the power transformer, output transistors and heat sinks, as well as tremors transmitted by the sound of the speakers.
YPAO-R.S.C. calibration with multi-point measurement analyses the room acoustics using the supplied microphone and corrects early reflections, improving instrument localisation and dialogue intelligibility while optimising the parameters for CINEMA DSP, Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. YPAO Volume, adaptive dynamic range compression and Pure Direct allow playback to be tailored to the volume level and the type of content; Compressed Music Enhancer restores the frequency range lost to compression. The receiver supports bi-amping, 2.2 pre-outs and wireless rear speakers via MusicCast 20 or MusicCast 50.
On the video side there are 7 HDMI inputs and 1 output with eARC, with HDMI inputs 1–3 supporting 8K/60 Hz and 4K/120 Hz pass-through at 24 Gbps, HDR10+, Dolby Vision and the gaming features ALLM and VRR. Network functions include 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (SBC/AAC), AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and the MusicCast multiroom system with app control. The feature set is rounded out by an MM phono input, optical and coaxial digital inputs, four analogue inputs, an FM/AM and DAB tuner (depending on region), powered Zone2, a +12 V trigger output and eight SCENE presets. Weight 10.2 kg, dimensions 435 × 171 × 372 mm.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
