The Yamaha R-S202D is a stereo Hi-Fi receiver combining an integrated amplifier, a digital DAB/DAB+ and FM tuner and wireless reception via Bluetooth (SBC / AAC). It follows the "Natural Sound" concept, i.e. reproducing music exactly as it was recorded, and although it belongs among the entry-level models, it draws on Yamaha's experience in developing both Hi-Fi components and musical instruments.
The power section delivers 100 W + 100 W into 8 ohms (40 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.2 % THD), 115 W + 115 W into 4 ohms and dynamic power of up to 180 W per channel into 2 ohms. The circuit design shortens the signal paths and optimises the board layout; the power transformer placed close to the output stage reduces losses and improves the ability to supply current at peaks. The signal and power grounds are joined at a single point, which limits mutual interference and contributes to a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 dB at the CD input.
The result of these measures is a clearly legible presentation with a low noise floor, stable localisation of instruments and sufficient headroom at dynamic peaks, even with less sensitive loudspeakers. A frequency response of 20 Hz – 20 kHz (±0.5 dB) and distortion of 0.025 % on the Phono (MM) – REC Out path confirm the linearity of the preamplifier section.
The unit features terminals for two pairs of loudspeakers with an A / B / A+B selector, a headphone output and a memory of 40 presets separately for DAB/DAB+ and FM. Digital broadcasting also offers automatic tuning and station name display. The automatic standby function can be set to 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours, with standby consumption of 0.5 W. The design with a brushed front panel, simple operation and the supplied remote control is complemented by a chassis measuring 435 × 141 × 322 mm and weighing 6.7 kg.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
