The Yamaha R-N800A is a network stereo receiver that combines a power amplifier, DAC and streaming platform in a single unit designed for a home Hi-Fi system. At the heart of the digital section is the ESS SABRE ES9080Q 384 kHz / 32-bit DAC, which together with Yamaha's own network module achieves a high signal-to-noise ratio. Adapting the sound to the acoustics of the room is handled by automatic YPAO™ calibration with precision EQ, working at a resolution of up to 192 kHz / 64 bit.
The design is based on the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) concept, with symmetrical layout of the left and right channels and the shortest possible signal paths. The rigid, low-vibration chassis is complemented by the Art Base resin frame, which absorbs unwanted vibrations, and by anti-resonance feet with thin curved ribs around the perimeter and thick straight ribs in the centre that disperse transmitted vibration energy. Also applied is the low-impedance concept with thick ground conductors and a screw connection of the power stage output, which reduces losses and signal degradation.
The power section delivers 100 W + 100 W into 8 ohms at 0.07% THD, with dynamic power reaching 140 / 170 / 220 / 290 W into 8 / 6 / 4 / 2 ohms. Pure Direct mode bypasses the buffer, tone controls, loudness and balance, thereby shortening the signal path — frequency response is then 10 Hz – 100 kHz ±1.0 dB and the signal-to-noise ratio 100 dB. The result is precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image, legible decay of the recording's space and dynamic contrast without masking quieter passages.
Connectivity covers a phono input for a turntable, CD, line 1 and line 2 inputs, two optical and two coaxial digital inputs, pre out, subwoofer out, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (SBC / AAC) and a DAB / DAB+ tuner with 40 presets. The USB DAC with asynchronous transfer and a dedicated crystal oscillator supports native playback of DSD 11.2 MHz and PCM 384 kHz. The MusicCast network platform enables multiroom operation, streaming from services such as Amazon Music HD or Spotify, AirPlay 2 and handling of ALAC up to 96 kHz, WAV, FLAC and AIFF up to 384 kHz; the unit is also Roon Tested certified.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
