Description

Network HiFi receiver with toroidal transformer, ESS SABRE DAC and YPAO calibration

The Yamaha R-N2000A is a network HiFi receiver that combines an integrated stereo amplifier, streamer, USB DAC and FM tuner in a single chassis. It plays both lossless and high-resolution formats (MP3, WMA, MPEG-4 AAC, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, DSD) and supports streaming services via the MusicCast system. The automatic YPAO calibration with precision EQ and R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) works with a resolution of up to 192 kHz / 64 bit and actively corrects early reflections according to speaker placement and the materials in the room, so adapting to the room's acoustics requires no manual intervention.

The construction draws on solutions from the brand's flagship models. Power is supplied by a toroidal transformer, beneath which a 3 mm brass base is inserted between the bottom of the transformer and the inner chassis to damp vibrations. A mechanical ground concept is applied — the foot screws are welded directly to the main chassis, to which the large heat sink, power transformer and block capacitors are also firmly attached. The design is completed by silver-plated brass feet and speaker terminals machined from pure brass. The low-impedance concept uses thick ground conductors and a screw connection of the power amplifier output for a more solid ground.

The signal path is defined by a floating and balanced power amplifier, whose circuits, including the power supply, are completely isolated from ground, eliminating the influence of minor voltage fluctuations and external ground noise. The result is symmetrical push-pull operation of the output stage and a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB (CD, Pure Direct). The symmetrical folding-book design places the power supply in the centre and the power amplifier blocks at both edges of the unit, which limits mutual interference between the channels and improves their separation. D/A conversion is handled by the ESS SABRE ES9026PRO in a four-channel configuration with balanced analogue output, preserving the subtle nuances and spatial information of the recording.

In terms of power, it delivers 90 W + 90 W into 8 ohms and 145 W + 145 W into 4 ohms at 0.07 % THD, with a frequency response of 5 Hz – 100 kHz (+0/−3 dB). Connectivity includes phono, CD, line 1 and line 2 inputs, two optical and one coaxial digital input, a USB DAC type B input supporting native DSD 11.2 MHz and PCM 384 kHz, a subwoofer pre-out, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth (SBC/AAC), AirPlay 2 and an HDMI ARC connector for connecting a television with a single cable. The front panel also features illuminated analogue level meters and an organic LED display showing information about the content being played.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
