The Stage III Concepts A.S.P. Proteus is a reference-class AC power cable, structurally optimised for power distributors, line conditioners and power amplifiers — in other words, high-current components placed on the floor or in its immediate vicinity. The signal, or rather current path is formed by massive AeroStrandUltra silver-palladium alloy ribbon conductors, taken over from the flagship Leviathan model, complemented by an air dielectric with FEP Teflon tubing. The result is practically unlimited current capability and precise control of the low end.
The conductors are cryogenically treated and slowly extruded to order, arranged in a configuration of 4x2 individually damped and shielded dual conductors in a quadruplex helix geometry, complemented by a massive silver-plated ground conductor in a silver-plated braid. The entire conductor array is encapsulated in a granulated H.D.A. (High Density Alloy) filler, which together with layers of soft polymer, ceramic and ferrite forms mechanical damping designed precisely for cables routed along the floor, where structural vibrations are transmitted.
The shielding has a multi-layer structure: radiation-resistant H.D.A. foil combined with a metallised copper braid blocks external EMI and RFI interference. The suppression of both electromagnetic and mechanical interference manifests itself in an exceptionally low noise floor, out of which decays and spatial information emerge far more distinctly. The high current reserve also contributes to the stability of dynamic peaks under the load of power stages and to firm localisation of instruments within the stereo image.
The cable is handmade in the USA exclusively from in-house components, including hand-crafted connector and cable housings made of polymer and composite fibres; the manufacturer uses no mass-produced or off-the-shelf parts.
