Description

Active subwoofer with Twisted Flare Port technology and a PWM digital amplifier

The Yamaha NS-SW200 is an active subwoofer designed to extend the bass range of both stereo and home cinema systems, built around a 20 cm cone woofer and a PWM digital amplifier rated at 130 W. The key design element is the Twisted Flare Port, a shaped bass reflex port that works with the airflow at its outlet and contributes to cleaner, more accurate low frequencies. The 28–200 Hz frequency range allows it to be matched with a wide variety of loudspeakers.

The digital power stage operates with high efficiency, reducing power consumption and heat losses, and requires no output choke — the result is a low level of noise and distortion together with fast transient response. This is complemented by a dual feedback circuit, which applies feedback twice and further reduces distortion. Cone control is handled by Advanced YST II with ANIC (Advanced Negative Impedance Converter) circuitry, combining the negative impedance and constant current principles; the system dynamically optimises the driver's effective impedance and maintains linear response.

The gently twisted port shaping disperses the air vortex forming at its edge and creates smoother airflow. This suppresses sounds that are not part of the input signal, so the bass comes across as more defined and better controlled — whether it is film effects or the atmosphere of a live concert recording. Stable cone control translates into a more precise attack of each note and a more intelligible bottom octave.

The controls are placed on a front panel angled at 45°, so power and volume remain accessible even when the unit is placed on the floor; an LED indicator above the power button shows the status even in a darkened room. A system connector allows linking with the amplifier's power supply, and the Auto Standby function with selectable sensitivity switches the unit to standby when no signal is present (0.3 W consumption). A phase switch (normal / reverse) is also provided. The rounded front section and side panels are available in several colour finishes.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
