The Yamaha NS-SW050 is a compact powered subwoofer designed to extend the bass range for both music and movie soundtracks. It combines a 20 cm (8") cone woofer, a discrete amplifier circuit design and a pair of Yamaha's own technologies — Twisted Flare Port and Advanced YST II. The 28–200 Hz frequency range covers the low end below typical bookshelf speakers.
Twisted Flare Port is the result of long-term development in bass enclosures: the gently twisted and flared shape of the bass-reflex port disperses the air vortex forming at its edge and creates smoother airflow. This reduces noise that is not part of the original signal, so the bass sounds cleaner and better controlled. Advanced YST II (Yamaha Active Servo Technology II) combines the principles of negative impedance and constant current; the ANIC (Advanced Negative Impedance Converter) circuits dynamically optimise the effective impedance of the driver and maintain linear response.
More precise control of cone movement results in more stable and better-timed bass — drum hits and low-frequency effects sound clearly defined, with no smearing of decay. The 50 W output power (100 Hz, 5 ohms, 10 % THD) and 100 W dynamic power (5 ohms) suit use in small to medium-sized rooms.
The cabinet, with gently rounded edges and an angled front panel, measures 291 x 292 x 341 mm and weighs 8.5 kg, so it can be placed discreetly in a living room or a home cinema. It is available in black, walnut and white finishes to match the other speakers in your system.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
