Yamaha NS-IC800 two-way coaxial in-ceiling loudspeakers for custom installation

The Yamaha NS-IC800 is a pair of in-ceiling loudspeakers intended for custom installations where the speaker should be acoustically fully fledged, yet visually discreet. The design uses a two-way coaxial driver arrangement that places the tweeter on the axis of the woofer, so the sound radiates from a single point. Supplied with the speakers is a magnetically attached grille that can be repainted to match the colour of the ceiling, together with a protective cover for the construction phase.

The woofer measures 8" in diameter and uses a mica-filled polypropylene cone, combining stiffness with internal damping. The upper range is handled by a 1" fluid-cooled soft dome, which is swivelling, so the dispersion of the high frequencies can be fine-tuned to the listening position even when the location of the ceiling cut-out is fixed by the building structure. A mounting depth of 4-1/4" and a diameter of 10-3/4" allow installation into common plasterboard ceilings; the weight of a single unit is 4.2 lb.

The frequency range of 50 Hz – 28 kHz covers the band from the low bass to ultra-high frequencies, while a sensitivity of 90 dB (2.83 V/1 m) at an impedance of 8 ohms reduces the demands on amplifier power. Power handling of 50 W nominal and 140 W maximum provides headroom even in larger spaces. The coaxial arrangement contributes to a more stable perception of the sound source off the main axis, which is crucial with ceiling placement – reproduction stays consistent as you move around the room.

The NS-IC800 can be used as both a front and a surround ceiling speaker, that is, in stereo multi-room systems as well as part of a multichannel home setup. The swivelling tweeter and the paintable grille broaden the options for integration into an interior without compromising the dispersion of the high frequencies.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
