The Yamaha NS-IC600 is a pair of in-ceiling speakers designed for installation into a suspended ceiling, where they can serve as front or surround channels. The design is based on a two-way coaxial driver arrangement, which concentrates the radiation of both bands along a single axis and simplifies placement within the room. Magnetic grille attachment allows the grille to be fitted and removed without visible fixings, contributing to a clean ceiling appearance.
The 6 1/2" bass-midrange driver uses a mica-filled polypropylene cone, combining stiffness with internal damping. High frequencies are handled by a 1" fluid-cooled soft dome, which can be pivoted and aimed towards the listening position. A paintable grille with a protective cover is included, so the speaker can be colour-matched to the ceiling surface.
A frequency response of 65 Hz – 28 kHz and sensitivity of 90 dB (2.83 V/1 m) make the system a natural partner for common AV receivers; an 8 ohm impedance and power handling of 40 W nominal / 110 W maximum provide headroom in larger rooms. The coaxial layout delivers stable imaging and an even presentation even off the listening axis, while the pivoting tweeter improves detail resolution and vocal intelligibility in ceiling installations. A mounting depth of 4-1/4" and a weight of 3.3 lbs each make installation into standard suspended ceilings straightforward.
Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
