The NS-IC400 is a pair of ceiling speakers designed for permanent installation into suspended ceilings, where they serve as front or surround channels. The design is based on a full range open back driver, which uses the ceiling cavity itself as the acoustic space, simplifying installation without the need for a separate enclosure. Magnetically attached grilles allow installation without visible fixings and easy removal for servicing.
At the heart of the system is a 4" driver with a dual-layer cone, covering the 95 Hz – 40 kHz range without a crossover in the main signal path. The sensitivity of 85 dB (2.83 V / 1 m) and 8 ohm impedance suit common amplifiers and installation amplifiers, with a maximum power handling of 90 W. The 3-1/8" mounting depth and weight of 1.76 lb per unit reduce the demands placed on the ceiling structure.
A full-range solution without band splitting contributes to phase consistency and stable source localisation, which matters with ceiling placement for vocal intelligibility and smooth transitions between channels. A response extending to 40 kHz supports the legibility of upper harmonics, while the lower limit of 95 Hz assumes the addition of a subwoofer for full-range use. Supplied with a paintable grille with a protective cover, allowing it to be matched to the ceiling colour.
Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
