The Yamaha NS-777 is a three-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker with four drivers, designed to reproduce digital film and music sources. It belongs to the EF (Elliptical Form) series, characterised by the elliptical shape of the cabinet, waveguide horns for the midrange and treble bands and a high sensitivity of 89 dB/2.83 V/1 m, thanks to which the speaker places no increased demands on amplifier power.
The bass band is handled by two 20 cm drivers with a PMD diaphragm (Polymer-injected Mica Diaphragm), which combines low mass with sufficient stiffness and damping. The midrange is covered by a 13 cm cone driver and the treble by a 2.5 cm aluminium dome, both complemented by a waveguide. The crossover frequencies are set at 1 kHz and 4 kHz, impedance is 6 ohms, nominal power handling 100 W and maximum 250 W. The internal wiring consists of Monster Cable wiring and the terminal allows bi-wiring.
The waveguides shape the dispersion of the mid and high frequencies, thereby contributing to more precise localisation of instruments and a more stable sound image in a home cinema. The pair of bass drivers in the bass-reflex cabinet extends the frequency range downwards to 30 Hz (upper limit 35 kHz) and supports the dynamic peaks of film soundtracks. The aluminium dome maintains clarity in the treble without harshness, and the cabinet, measuring 276 × 1,100 × 390 mm and weighing 24.4 kg, is finished in Yamaha's traditional piano lacquer.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
