Three-way floorstanding speaker with bass reflex, waveguides and PMD drivers

The Yamaha NS-555 is a three-way, four-driver floorstanding speaker with bass-reflex tuning, designed for reproducing both music and digital film soundtrack formats. It belongs to the EF (Elliptical Form) series, characterised by an elliptically shaped cabinet with a traditional piano finish. The acoustic design is based on waveguide horns around the midrange and tweeter drivers and a pair of PMD bass drivers.

The bass section consists of two 16 cm drivers with PMD (Polymer-injected Mica Diaphragm) cones, i.e. polymer-injected mica diaphragms offering high stiffness and controlled internal damping. The midrange is handled by a 13 cm cone driver with a waveguide, while the highs are reproduced by a 2.5 cm aluminium dome, likewise with a waveguide. The crossover frequencies are set at 1 kHz and 4 kHz, internal wiring is provided by Monster Cable, and the terminal allows bi-wiring.

A sensitivity of 88 dB/2.83 V/1 m at an impedance of 6 ohms and a power handling of 100 W nominal (250 W peak) make the speaker suitable for use with ordinary stereo and multichannel amplifiers without requiring extreme output. The frequency range of 35 Hz – 35 kHz covers deep bass as well as the band above the limit of audibility with high-resolution sources. The waveguides direct the radiation of the midrange and treble, thereby stabilising instrument localisation and widening the optimum listening position — a benefit especially in home cinema. Dimensions of 222 × 980 × 345 mm and a weight of 20 kg apiece reflect the rigid cabinet construction.
