Description

Two-way bass-reflex speaker with PMD woofer and waveguide horn for precise spatial imaging

The NS-333 is a two-way loudspeaker from the EF (Elliptical Form) series, designed for music reproduction as well as digital film sound formats. It combines a 13 cm PMD cone woofer with a 2.5 cm aluminium dome tweeter with waveguide horn, with the whole system working in a bass-reflex enclosure design. The crossover frequency is set at 3 kHz and the impedance is 6 ohms.

The woofer diaphragm uses PMD (Polymer-injected Mica Diaphragm) technology, i.e. a mica-filled polymer that combines low mass with high internal rigidity and damping. The internal wiring is implemented with Monster Cable conductors. The elliptically shaped enclosure with piano lacquer finish follows the traditional Yamaha execution; dimensions of 200 x 320 x 213 mm and a weight of 5.5 kg correspond to a compact bookshelf design.

The waveguide in front of the tweeter directs the radiation of high frequencies, making it possible to control the shape of the sound field and stabilise the localisation of instruments and effects in home cinema. A sensitivity of 87 dB/2.83 V/1 m together with a frequency response of 60 Hz – 35 kHz and a power handling of 60 W nominal or 150 W maximum contributes to a wide dynamic range and detail clarity at higher volumes.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
