Yamaha NS-2000A: three-way floorstanding speaker with Harmonious Diaphragm drivers and resonance suppression

The NS-2000A is a three-way, four-driver floorstanding loudspeaker with bass-reflex tuning, designed to deliver a consistent tonal character across the entire frequency range. The driver complement comprises two 16 cm cone woofers, an 8 cm dome midrange and a 3 cm dome tweeter, with crossover frequencies at 750 Hz and 3.5 kHz. All drivers use the newly developed Harmonious Diaphragm, which combines ZYLON PBO fibre — offering a high speed of sound propagation and suitable internal damping — with the spruce wood Yamaha uses for the soundboards of its concert grand pianos.

The cabinet construction draws on the methodology of musical instrument development — on measurements with laser vibrometers and finite element method (FEM) analysis. The internal bracing is optimised to stiffen the enclosure at points critical to bass response. Patented R.S. (Resonance Suppression) chambers are located behind the tweeter and midrange driver — a pair of specially shaped tubes that cancel unwanted resonance behind the diaphragm without the use of conventional absorbent materials. Inside the cabinet works the patented Acoustic Absorber resonator, which eliminates standing waves and makes it possible to substantially reduce the amount of damping material.

The result of this approach is reproduction with a low degree of microdynamic attenuation: limiting the absorbent filling preserves energy and contrast between quiet and loud passages, while suppressing resonance behind the diaphragms contributes to the intelligibility of subtle nuances in voices and instruments. The uniform diaphragm material across the bands supports a seamless transition between drivers and stable localisation of instruments within the soundstage. The frequency response extends from 34 Hz to 65 kHz (-10 dB), sensitivity reaches 88 dB and impedance is 6 ohms with a minimum of 3.5 ohms.

The crossover is fitted with top-quality components including audiophile MCap SUPREME Classic capacitors from the German brand Mundorf and a massive bass-band coil. Connection is provided by large screw terminals machined from solid brass and shaped to fit the fingers, allowing firm tightening and reliable contact. The finish uses a piano gloss applied by the same process as on Yamaha concert grand pianos. Each speaker weighs 32.8 kg, measures 330 × 1134 × 459 mm, and the accessories include four spikes and a front grille.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
