The MusicCast 20 is an active wireless speaker built on the MusicCast multiroom platform, able to work on its own, as a stereo pair, or as rear surround speakers in a system with a compatible Yamaha AV receiver or soundbar. It supports High-Resolution Audio and music playback directly from the built-in streaming services, whose availability varies by region. Control is handled through the MusicCast Controller app, complemented by touch preset buttons for instantly launching a saved station or playlist.
The acoustic design combines a 9 cm woofer and a 3 cm soft-dome tweeter, supplemented by a pair of passive radiators that extend low-frequency response without the need for a larger cabinet volume. The amplifier delivers a maximum output power of 40 W, split into 25 W for the woofer and 15 W for the tweeter. Dimensions of 150 x 186 x 130 mm and a weight of 2.2 kg allow placement on a shelf or a side table; black and white finishes are available.
Connectivity is covered by dual-band Wi-Fi 2.4 / 5 GHz, Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.2 + EDR (A2DP, AVRCP, SBC and AAC codecs) and AirPlay 2 after a firmware update. The speaker plays MP3, WMA and MPEG-4 AAC up to 48 kHz/16-bit, ALAC up to 96 kHz/24-bit and FLAC, WAV or AIFF up to 192 kHz/24-bit, which with a quality source contributes to better resolution of detail and a more natural decay than with compressed formats. Wireless integration in MusicCast Surround mode also does away with running speaker cables to the rear channels.
Operation is rounded out by an alarm function with snooze and a sleep timer, preset memory and a network standby mode drawing 1.9 W with Network and Bluetooth Standby active, or 0.3 W when they are switched off. The unit is mains-powered and typical consumption reaches 10 W. Connecting several MusicCast devices to a single network creates a multiroom system controlled from one app.
Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
