CrystalConnect van Gogh is a digital interconnect designed to carry the S/PDIF signal between a source and a converter, for example between a CD transport, streamer or digital output and an external DAC. The construction is based on a coaxial line with a characteristic impedance of 75 Ohm, the standard for digital audio transmission, maintained along the entire length of the cable including the termination. It is available with BNC or RCA connectors, allowing direct connection to both common and more professional digital inputs.
Correct impedance matching is crucial in digital transmission: inconsistent impedance causes signal reflections on the line, which show up as deformed edges of the data stream and increased timing uncertainty when the clock is recovered in the receiver. Precisely defined conductor and shield geometry therefore reduces reflections and jitter at the DAC input and contributes to a more stable PLL lock.
The result is a cleaner rendering of detail, more precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image and a calmer background to the recording, as reduced timing uncertainty limits the modulation distortion that arises during conversion to the analogue signal. The cable is therefore well suited to systems where the digital link between source and converter is the defining element of the chain.
