Kroma Atelier Maribel: flagship loudspeaker with a Krion® cabinet and twin AMT tweeters

Maribel is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker from the Spanish workshop Kroma Atelier, conceived as an uncompromising statement of the design philosophy of Javier Millán and his son. The four-way layout with twin AMT tweeters, a 3" dome midrange, two 8" mid-bass drivers and two 15" paper-cone woofers covers a bandwidth of 20 Hz – 27 kHz. A sensitivity of 93 dB and an impedance of 8 ohms (or 4 ohms when wired through the four pairs of terminals) allow it to work with amplifiers rated from 20 to 1000 W, from modestly powered triode designs to large power amps.

The enclosure is made entirely from Krion® — a dense, non-porous, exceptionally rigid and non-magnetic composite. The Silent Cavity construction suppresses structural resonances of the cabinet, so the sound remains free of colouration imposed by the material. The internal volume is not merely stuffed with damping material: airflow is shaped by expansion chambers, channels and resonators working on the principle of acoustic silencers, complemented by Phase-Lock acoustic panels whose density is matched to their specific location within the enclosure. The result is control of internal reflections and a linear response achieved purely acoustically, with no electronic correction.

The drivers are based on Scan-Speak Ellipticor units with elliptical magnet and voice-coil geometry, custom-modified for Kroma Atelier. This geometry reduces distortion and speeds up the impulse response, which translates into more legible note attacks and more precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image. The signal path is executed as a tri-metal combination of copper, silver and gold: copper forms the conductive foundation, silver supports transient transfer and tonal clarity, and gold contributes to the long-term stability of the contacts. The individual signal branches are physically separated, the crossover uses Duelund and Mundorf components, and the mounting hardware is non-magnetic in order to limit the smearing of micro-detail.

The bass-reflex port is hand-shaped from wood with an emphasis on laminar airflow, which reduces turbulence noise and contributes to a well-defined low end. The cabinets stand on IsoAcoustics isolators, which mechanically decouple them from the floor and improve both imaging focus and bass articulation. With dimensions of 201 × 63 × 53 cm (H × D × W) and a weight of 220 kg each, this is a design intended for large rooms and top-tier systems. Its world premiere took place at Audio Video Show 2025 in Warsaw.

Kroma Atelier

The art of resonance-free sound: the Spanish brand Kroma Atelier represents the absolute pinnacle of high-end loudspeaker design. Its philosophy is based on a radical approach: the elimination of all metal elements from the cabinet construction, thereby achieving sound free from any colouration or mechanical resonance. Krion® material and craftsmanship At the heart of every Kroma Atelier model is Krion® – a non-porous, high-density synthetic stone that provides unrivalled acoustic inertia. Instead of conventional screws and metal joints, Kroma Atelier employs precision joining techniques and specialised thermoplastic materials, ensuring perfectly clean energy transfer.

Why is Kroma Atelier unique? - Organic sound: Thanks to the absence of metal parts and the use of top-of-the-range components (Mundorf, Duelund), the result is a natural, lively sound. - Artistic craftsmanship: Surface finishes utilising genuine gold leaf or traditional techniques from renowned Spanish masters. - Acoustic purity: Every detail is designed to suppress unwanted vibrations and allow only pure musical emotion to shine through. The Kroma Atelier is not merely an audio device; it is an acoustic sculpture that combines technological futurism with the heritage of classical art.
