LUMIN L2 8TB SSD — network music server with an audiophile 4-port switch

The LUMIN L2 is a UPnP (OpenHome) music server with an internal capacity of 8 TB (2× 4 TB 2.5" SSD) that combines a music library with an audiophile-grade 4-port network switch. It is intended primarily for owners of LUMIN network players who want their own collection of recordings stored locally while simplifying the cabling in their system. The unit requires no configuration — music added via USB or over the network is made available to players on the network automatically.

Content transfer is handled by USB 3.0 Micro Type B for a direct connection to a computer, or by SMB support for transfers over the network. The network section offers 2× Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 (1000BASE-T) and 2× standard Gigabit SFP for an optical link that electrically isolates the hi-fi system from the rest of the home network. Two USB 3.0 Type A ports are reserved for future use. The server software, developed by LUMIN itself, emphasises stability, tag handling and high-resolution playback including DSF, DIFF, DoP, FLAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF formats.

The construction is derived from the reference P1 player — a massive CNC-machined aluminium chassis with thick shielded panels suppresses vibration and external interference. A low-noise power supply in a shielded compartment (100–240 V AC with automatic range selection) and the generous board layout limit interference with sensitive electronics. The result is network transmission with a lower level of electrical noise, which during subsequent conversion in the DAC translates into a calmer background and more stable localisation of instruments within the stereo image.

Deploying the L2 also removes the need for cheap, electrically noisy switches near the audio chain. The optical link via the SFP ports provides a galvanically isolated entry point into the system, while the copper RJ45 ports serve the remaining components. The unit is JPLAY certified, measures 350 × 350 × 60.5 mm and weighs 6 kg.
