Description

Hybrid monoblock with no overall feedback and a two-stage signal path

The Ypsilon Electronics HYPERION is a high-power hybrid power amplifier in monoblock form, designed for demanding loudspeakers with low and variable impedance. The design is built on the principle of no overall feedback and on a signal path shortened to the absolute minimum, consisting of just two amplification stages. Output power reaches 370 W rms into 8 ohms, 650 W rms into 4 ohms and 1150 W rms into 2 ohms, which corresponds to the ability to drive even impedance-demanding loads without restricting dynamics.

The first amplification stage uses a double triode with low output impedance, connected to the power stage via a wide-bandwidth silver interstage transformer. The input is likewise transformer-coupled by a specially manufactured silver transformer that provides a precisely balanced input signal; this is also measurable in the response, with a +2.5 dB rise at 50 kHz and a frequency range of 6 Hz – 80 kHz (−3 dB). The output stage works in a unique “balanced single-ended” topology biased in class A up to 100 W into 8 ohms. Gain is 20× (26 dB), input impedance 22 kohms, output impedance 0.3 ohm.

The power supply is built around large chokes for smooth filtering and a set of fast, low-impedance capacitors. The mains transformer uses a high-quality core material and a specific winding technique aimed at suppressing mechanical, magnetic and electrical noise. All internal wiring consists of in-house made silver conductor with Teflon insulation. The 400 W idle consumption and the weight of 95 kg per channel result from the massive energy reserves and from class A operation over a substantial part of the power range.

The combination of transformer coupling, a simple signal path and the absence of global feedback translates into stable localisation of instruments, legible micro-detail and natural dynamic build-up without compression in loud passages. The large power reservoir keeps the bass region under control even as impedance drops, while the single-ended character of the output stage preserves transparency and delicacy in the upper registers.

Ypsilon Electronics

Ypsilon Electronics was established in 1995. It was founded by two sound engineers with extensive experience in the field of live music reproduction. It was not only their experience with live music and concerts that provided the necessary knowledge, but also their technical background in electronics; it was precisely this that helped shape their vision of how a high-end audio device should function and what level of reliability it should demonstrate. It was precisely their love of natural live music and their determination that compelled them to transform this passion into technology – technology that combines traditional approaches with modern, pioneering design solutions and processes. The result of these efforts is a range of unique products that convey the true essence of music to listeners… emotion!
