The HEP-5000SU are replacement suede earpads designed for the flagship Yamaha YH-5000SE headphones, also compatible with the YH-4000 model. The surface is made of TORAY Ultrasuede®, a material used in the interiors of luxury cars, while the inner side uses a breathable mesh material. One pair weighs approximately 30 g, so the low load on the headphone structure is preserved.
The earpads are sewn with a three-dimensional stitch that follows the shape of the area around the ear and ensures an even fit around the entire circumference. Geometry handled this way contributes to a stable seating of the headphones on the head and to even clamping pressure without local pressure points.
The combination of the suede surface and the ventilated interior also influences the character of the reproduction — the result is a softer, warmer sound compared to harder materials. A consistent fit around the ear maintains a stable acoustic chamber in front of the driver, which supports a balanced presentation and fatigue-free listening even during longer sessions.
Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
