Description

Yamaha HA-L7A headphone amplifier with Floating and Balanced Power Amplifier technology and ESS ES9038PRO DAC

The Yamaha HA-L7A is a desktop headphone amplifier with an integrated D/A converter that brings amplification engineering developed for Hi-Fi components and AV receivers into the world of headphone listening. The output stage is built around the patented Floating and Balanced Power Amplifier technology, while the digital section is handled by the 32-bit ESS Technology ES9038PRO converter. The unit offers both balanced and unbalanced headphone outputs with an output power of 1,000 mW + 1,000 mW (1 kHz, 0.01 % THD, 32 Ω) and a recommended headphone impedance of 32 to 600 Ω.

The output stage consists of four sets of power circuits for the positive and negative legs of the left and right channels, all isolated from ground, resulting in consistently balanced push-pull operation. Headphones can be connected without reconfiguring the amplifier between balanced and unbalanced modes, so sonic differences between the individual connectors are minimal. All main stages after the DAC are built discretely and fully balanced, with unbalanced inputs converted internally to balanced transmission. A dedicated master clock with an extremely low phase noise crystal oscillator and the bundling of four converter channels per side contribute to a wide dynamic range and a signal-to-noise ratio above 120 dB.

The power supply uses two toroidal transformers – one for the small-signal circuitry and one for the amplification section – which reduces mutual interference. The toroidal cores limit stray magnetic flux and the bifilar winding reduces voltage fluctuation, stabilising the power supply. Mechanical integrity is addressed by a rigid construction: an 8 mm thick extruded aluminium panel forming the L-shaped top section, transformers mounted on 2 mm steel plate, a massive front panel and a double rear wall. Five conical steel feet with damping pads and a weight of 5.3 kg suppress the transfer of vibration into the signal path.

The combination of separated power supplies, a fully balanced path and vibration control shows in the intelligibility of quiet passages, stable instrument localisation and controlled yet energetic bass. With balanced headphone connection the common impedance of the transmission path drops, improving channel separation. Going beyond a conventional amplifier, the SOUND FIELD mode is based on CINEMA DSP technology from AV receivers and offers six programmes (CINEMA, DRAMA, MUSIC VIDEO, CONCERT HALL, OUTDOOR LIVE, BGM + STRAIGHT), while Pure Direct mode bypasses unnecessary processing. Connectivity comprises USB Type-B (PCM up to 384 kHz/32 bit, DSD up to 11.2 MHz), coaxial, optical and RCA inputs, PRE/LINE outputs on XLR3 and RCA, plus an OLED display.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
