The Stage III Concepts A.S.P. Gorgon is a reference-class analogue signal cable designed to carry line-level signal between source and amplifier. It follows on from the long-established Gryphon model and introduces a completely reworked construction. At its core are four AeroStrandUltra™ ribbon conductors of a silver-palladium alloy with an increased cross-section, slowly extruded and cryogenically treated, arranged in a quad helix configuration.
The signal path is surrounded by a vacuum dielectric with an inner core of nylon and FEP Teflon, evacuated to 675 mm Hg, which minimises the amount of solid insulation in the immediate vicinity of the conductors. Shielding is handled in multiple stages: an H.D.A. layer with complete immunity to high-frequency interference is complemented by the outer ASPIS™ shield of braided metallised copper and conductive nylon. The multi-layer structure contains ferrite, ceramic and a high-density alloy granulate that increases mechanical damping and suppresses the transfer of vibration into the conductors.
The combination of increased conductor cross-section, thorough shielding and resonance damping pushes distortion to a practically unmeasurable level. In practice this translates into a neutral presentation with no favoured frequency band, clearly legible micro-detail and precise localisation of instruments within the stereo image. The cable works as a transmission link with no character of its own, which becomes especially evident in high-resolution systems.
Production is entirely by hand, without the use of off-the-shelf components. The conductors run in hand-braided carbon fibre sleeves and are terminated with the company's own HYPERION connectors in RCA or XLR form, made from a silver alloy, cryogenically treated and fitted with insulators of a ceramic-loaded polymer.
