LUMIN D3 – network player with ES9028PRO DAC and upsampling to DSD256

The LUMIN D3 is a network streamer with an integrated DAC that follows on from the long-proven D1 and D2 models. At the heart of the analogue section sits the ESS SABRE32 ES9028PRO, complemented by an entirely new processing system with greater computing power and larger memory capacity. The player supports DSD256 and PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit, with both upsampling and downsampling available to every supported format. On the services side you get TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Spotify Connect, Roon Ready, AirPlay 2, Plex, MQA and TuneIn.

The construction is based on a new all-aluminium compact chassis with a thick CNC-machined front panel. Compared with the D2, steel has been removed from the structure, which improves resonance damping. The power supply with automatic 100–240 V AC range is housed in a shielded compartment that limits interference with sensitive circuitry. The finish uses a silky process taken from the flagship P1 model, less prone to fingerprints.

The analogue output stage is fully balanced, including XLR outputs (6 Vrms, pin 2 hot), joined by single-ended RCA at 3 Vrms. The completely redesigned analogue buffer with technology from the LUMIN X1 employs an audiophile output capacitor and achieves a very low noise floor with wide dynamic range. Precise timing is handled by a separate clock system that reduces jitter – the result is stable imaging of instruments, legible micro-detail and a quiet background to the recording. The BNC S/PDIF digital output carries PCM 44.1–192 kHz and DSD via DoP 2.8 MHz.

Inputs include gigabit Ethernet RJ45 and USB for connecting storage (FAT32, exFAT, NTFS). The player supports DSF, DIFF, DoP, FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MP3 and MQA, including gapless playback. Also on board is lossless Leedh Processing digital volume control, which eliminates rounding errors. Operation is handled by the LUMIN app for iOS and Android, with firmware updated on an ongoing basis under the continuous development programme. Dimensions 300 × 244 × 60 mm, weight 2.5 kg.
