The Stage III Concepts A.S.P. Reference Chimaera is a reference-class digital interconnect designed to carry a digital data stream with minimal jitter and timing deviation. The design is built around a single cryogenically treated Aerostrand Ultra™ ribbon conductor made of a silver-palladium alloy, slow-extruded to order and arranged in a coaxial configuration with a finely braided silver return conductor. This solution optimises impedance consistency along the entire run and contributes to precise shaping of the digital signal's edges.
The insulation system consists of a vacuum dielectric with an inner core of nylon and FEP Teflon, evacuated to a level of 675 mmHG. Reducing the proportion of solid dielectric lowers dielectric absorption and phase distortion in the high-frequency band. H.D.A. shielding with 100% radiation immunity protects the line against EMI/RFI interference, while the multi-layer construction with its granulated H.D.A. layer (high density alloy) also acts as mechanical damping, suppressing the transfer of vibration and resonance into the conductor.
Termination uses double cryogenically treated HYPERION silver connectors in RCA or XLR versions with carbon fibre bodies and ceramic-infused polymer insulators; alternatively, termination with FURUTECH silver/rhodium BNC connectors is available. Outer shells of hand-braided carbon add mechanical stability to the whole assembly. The cable is handmade in the USA with no off-the-shelf parts.
In terms of reproduction, the combination of stable impedance, low-loss insulation and thorough shielding shows up above all in the timing accuracy of the data stream.
