Description

Yamaha CD-C603RK — five-disc rack-mount CD changer with PlayXchange technology and Pure Direct mode

The CD-C603RK is a five-disc CD changer in a rack-mount design, intended for installations that call for long-term playback of multiple discs without operator attention. The PlayXchange function allows discs to be swapped while the current title is playing, so reproduction is never interrupted, and the fully opening disc tray makes all five positions accessible at once. The player handles pressed CDs as well as CD-R/RW media.

The construction is based on a rigorous selection of components and materials, with the internal layout of the boards and signal paths further refined compared with previous solutions. The laser pickup unit is mounted on a floating mechanism that isolates it from external vibrations and protects reading accuracy. Readout stability is handled by the Intelligent Digital Servo with a dedicated DSP: it continuously monitors the signal and corrects tracking, laser focus and spindle motor speed, thereby compensating for warped discs, dust and other media defects.

The Pure Direct mode, carried over from Yamaha amplifiers and receivers, switches off the digital audio output and the display. This reduces interference inside the unit and improves the purity of the analogue output, which translates into a lower noise level and better intelligibility of quiet passages. The measured parameters reflect this: a signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB, a dynamic range of 96 dB and harmonic distortion of 0.003 %. Frequency response with CD extends from 2 Hz to 20 kHz, and with data CDs and USB up to 44 kHz at a sampling frequency of 96 kHz.

The front-panel USB port extends playback to MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV and FLAC files, with WAV and FLAC supported up to 96 kHz / 24 bit; the same formats can also be played from data CDs. The signal is output via unbalanced RCA analogue outputs and an optical digital output, while Remote In and Remote Out connectors (3.5 mm) provide integration into controlled systems. Random, repeat, programmed and A-B repeat playback are available, along with playback mode memory, Ready Mode, auto start, Auto Power Standby, three-mode time display and four display brightness levels. Dimensions of 480 × 116 × 405 mm and a weight of 6.7 kg correspond to standard rack mounting.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
