The CD-C603 is a five-disc CD changer designed for classic hi-fi systems, combining changer capacity with digital file playback. It plays CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs, and via the USB port on the front panel it also handles music files in MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV and FLAC formats up to 96 kHz / 24-bit resolution. The combination of both sources lets you use a single device for both your physical and file-based library.
The design is based on a refined internal circuit layout, further revised compared with the previous solution with an emphasis on reproduction quality. The unit features the Pure Direct function, familiar from Yamaha amplifiers and receivers: pressing the button on the front panel or on the remote control switches off the digital audio output as well as the display. This reduces interference entering the analogue signal path, and the unloaded unbalanced analogue L/R output (RCA) works in the cleanest possible conditions. An optical digital output and 3.5 mm Remote In/Out connectors for system integration are also available.
The low noise level is reflected in the measured parameters: signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB, dynamic range of 96 dB and harmonic distortion of 0.003%. Frequency response with CD spans from 2 Hz to 20 kHz, and with data files sampled at 96 kHz up to 44 kHz (-3 dB). In practice this means legible micro-details in quiet passages, stable instrument localisation within the stereo image and dynamics without audible compression.
The mechanism is built around a fully sliding disc tray that allows all five discs to be changed at once. Play X Change technology allows the remaining discs to be swapped while the current title is playing, so playback is not interrupted. The weight of 5.6 kg and dimensions of 435 × 116 × 405 mm correspond to a more robust chassis, which helps suppress vibrations transmitted to the mechanism.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
