The ATC-5 is a valve control preamplifier with a phono stage, designed for systems that combine both analogue and digital sources. It follows on directly from the ATC-1 model, which was created thirty years ago as an attempt to define dynamic and natural reproduction, and represents a completely reworked version of that design. Air Tight has conceived it as a counterbalance to the trend towards excessive simplification of the signal path, which often leads to a technically clean but musically neutral sound.
The design is based on an optimised combination of circuit technology and sound tuning, rather than on reducing the number of components at any cost. The preamplifier is built to handle the demands of modern digital media with a high dynamic range as well as classic analogue sources, including a turntable, which requires a precise correction and amplification solution with a low noise floor.
The emphasis on tonal purity and dynamic range is reflected in the reproduction through clear rendering of detail, stable localisation of instruments within the soundstage, and smooth transitions between quiet and loud passages. The result is a sound that retains its musicality even with demanding material and does not suppress the emotional content of the recording.
The ATC-5 builds on thirty years of development by Air Tight and represents a continuation of the brand’s approach, in which technology is a means of conveying the musical experience. It is not a device built around a single flashy feature, but on a long-proven concept of valve pre-amplification, refined to its current form.

The Japanese company Air Tight has earned a legendary reputation in the world of high-end audio equipment. It was founded in 1986 in Takatsuki, near Osaka, by Atsushi Miura, who had previously headed the renowned Lux Audio brand. Together with engineer Masami Ishiguro, he built a company that has become synonymous with valve amplifiers of the highest quality. Today, the company is led by his son, Yutaka ‘Jack’ Miura, who continues to uphold the original standards of craftsmanship.
Whilst the audio industry has gradually shifted towards semiconductor and digital technology, Air Tight has remained faithful to valves and their warm, natural and immersive sound. The units are hand-wired using the point-to-point method, without printed circuit boards, resulting in a cleaner signal path and a long service life. The range includes valve integrated and power amplifiers, preamplifiers, phono preamplifiers, headphone amplifiers, MC cartridges and step-up transformers. Thanks to this dedication to traditional craftsmanship, Air Tight has become an icon amongst audiophiles seeking the rich sound experience that only vacuum tubes can provide.
