The Yamaha A-S701 is an integrated stereo amplifier built on the ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) concept, which combines an analogue signal path with the option of direct digital connection. Its output of 100 W + 100 W into 8 ohms (THD 0.019 %), or 160 W + 160 W into 4 ohms, is complemented by high dynamic power of 140/170/220/290 W into 8/6/4/2 ohms. Thanks to its optical and coaxial digital inputs, the unit is ready to accept a television or a Blu-ray player without the need for an external converter.
The design is based on I/O Direct Symmetrical Design, in which the left and right channels are routed directly and symmetrically, shortening the signal path and limiting the influence of interference. The ART (Anti-Resonance and Tough) Base bottom chassis with a central strut increases the rigidity of the whole unit and damps vibrations. The power supply and power section consist of a custom-made transformer and 12,000 µF block capacitors, extruded aluminium heatsinks, two relays in the direct signal path and single-point grounding.
The CD Direct Amplification mode routes the signal from the CD input along the shortest possible path and maximises the signal-to-noise ratio, which reaches 99 dB. The Pure Direct function bypasses the buffer amplifier, tone controls, loudness and balance, resulting in a cleaner presentation and more precise localisation of instruments. The continuously adjustable analogue loudness control with electronic volume compensates for the reduced perception of frequency extremes at low levels, so the tonal balance is maintained even during quiet listening. A frequency response of 10 Hz – 100 kHz (±1.0 dB) and a damping factor of 240 contribute to controlled bass.
The feature set includes gold-plated speaker and RCA terminals, an MM phono input for a turntable, a subwoofer pre-out, switching between speakers A, B or A+B, and a DC-out for powering the YBA-11 wireless adapter with the aptX codec. The aluminium front panel with a silver hairline finish is complemented by a rotary input selector with LED indication and a remote control that also operates Yamaha CD players. The Auto Power Standby function switches the unit into standby mode with 0.5 W consumption after approximately eight hours of inactivity.

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
