Description

Integrated amplifier with fully balanced circuit design and mechanical grounding of the chassis

The Yamaha A-S2200 is an integrated stereo amplifier built around a fully balanced circuit design from the input all the way to the speaker terminals, adopting several solutions from the higher-end A-S3200 model. The signal path is routed differentially, which suppresses common-mode noise — reflected in a signal-to-noise ratio of 114 dB via the balanced input and 110 dB via the line inputs. The feature set also includes an MM/MC phono preamplifier with an RIAA equalisation deviation of ±0.5 dB, so the unit can handle an analogue source without an external phono stage.

Power is supplied by a toroidal transformer rated at 625 VA, which feeds an output stage with a rated power of 90 W + 90 W into 8 ohms (0.07 % THD, 20 Hz–20 kHz) and 150 W + 150 W into 4 ohms. Dynamic power rises from 105 W into 8 ohms up to 220 W into 2 ohms, which — together with a damping factor above 250 — means firm control over more demanding loudspeakers. The internal wiring to the speaker terminals consists of PC-Triple C conductor with a diameter of 2.7 mm, complemented by thick ground wires as part of the low-impedance concept.

The construction is based on the Mechanical Ground Concept — the large power transformer, the block capacitors and the heatsink are bolted directly to the chassis, and the feet are anchored with welded screws. The result is maximum rigidity and suppression of unwanted vibration, which shows up as articulate and rhythmically precise bass. This rigidity is further supported by brass feet with a silver finish and speaker terminals machined from solid brass, allowing firm hand-tightening. The low-impedance ground routing contributes to a wide, open soundstage with precise localisation of instruments.

The audio path uses PP film capacitors designed for audio applications. The front panel carries a pair of illuminated analogue level meters that visualise the dynamics of the signal. The frequency response extends from 5 Hz to 100 kHz (+0 / −3 dB), the unit weighs 22.7 kg and measures 435 × 157 × 463 mm. By registering the product, the warranty can be extended to 5 years (2+3).

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
