Description

Yamaha A-S1200 — integrated amplifier with a toroidal transformer and floating balanced power amplifier stage

The A-S1200 is a Premium Hi-Fi class integrated stereo amplifier that combines the visual legacy of the golden era of hi-fi — analogue needle level meters with subtle LED backlighting — with Yamaha's current design approach. At its core is a Floating Balanced Power Amplifier and a toroidal power transformer rated at 625 VA, normally found only in flagship models. The amplifier delivers 90 W + 90 W into 8 ohms (20 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.07% THD) or 150 W + 150 W into 4 ohms, with a damping factor of ≥ 250 at 1 kHz.

Mechanical stability is ensured by the Mechanical Ground Concept, adopted from the A-S2200 and A-S3200 models. The foot screws are welded directly to the main chassis, and the large heat sink, power transformer and block capacitors are likewise mounted directly to it. The construction is completed by solid silver-plated metal feet, which increase the rigidity of the whole unit. The internal wiring to the speaker terminals uses a super-thick copper conductor with a diameter of 2.0 mm and the Low Impedance Concept with thick ground wires, which reduces the impedance of the common ground in the signal path.

The suppression of unwanted vibration and the low-impedance grounding translate into stable, rhythmically legible bass and an open soundstage with precise instrument localisation. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 110 dB at the line inputs, 96 dB at PHONO MM and 90 dB at PHONO MC, while the RIAA equalisation deviation is ±0.5 dB — the turntable input is therefore usable with both MM and MC cartridges without an external preamplifier. A frequency range of 5 Hz – 100 kHz (+0 / -3 dB) and a deviation of only +0 / -0.3 dB in the 20 Hz – 20 kHz band confirm the linearity of the transmission.

The speaker terminals are machined directly from pure brass, shaped to allow comfortable hand tightening and reliable contact. Measuring 435 × 157 × 463 mm and weighing 22 kg, the unit also offers a MAIN IN input (1 Vrms / 47 kohms) for direct use of the power section. By registering the product, the warranty can be extended under the 2+3 scheme to 5 years.

Yamaha

Yamaha is one of the few hi-fi manufacturers that also builds concert grand pianos and wind instruments. When developing an amplifier or a speaker system, therefore, it does not have to guess what a real instrument should sound like, as it has one to hand and can compare the sound to it. This forms the basis of a principle the brand has adhered to since the 1970s, known as ‘Natural Sound’: sound without embellishment and without any inherent colouration. In 1974, this principle was established by the NS-1000 loudspeakers with beryllium drivers, and ever since it has guided everything Yamaha produces for home listening, from turntables and amplifiers right through to AV receivers and wireless systems. Anyone looking for a sound that neither enhances nor embellishes a recording in any way will find exactly that with Yamaha.
