MOON 891: network player, DAC, phono stage and reference analogue preamp in a single chassis
The MOON 891 is a reference network player with DAC and analogue preamplifier that brings the digital and analogue parts of the chain together in one chassis, including a configurable MM/MC phono stage. Volume is handled by the analogue M-RAY2 system, which maintains accuracy and a low noise floor even at very low levels. Each stage has its own power supply in an optimised dual-mono architecture, giving control over the entire signal path from source to power amplifier.
The digital section is built around the MDE-3 engine, designed for transparent conversion. It handles PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD up to 11.2896 MHz (DSD256), both via USB Audio and via the MiND 2 network module. The player is Roon Ready and supports Qobuz Connect, AirPlay, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Bluetooth. The analogue, digital and volume modules are isolated both physically and electrically, reducing mutual interference and contributing to stable reproduction across formats and sources.
Connectivity includes six digital inputs, among them HDMI with ARC, three analogue inputs and variable RCA as well as XLR outputs. The phono input offers gain of 40, 54, 60 or 66 dB, capacitance of 0, 100 or 470 pF and impedance of 10 Ω, 100 Ω, 1 kΩ or 47 kΩ, allowing precise cartridge matching. Operation is made easier by a 5.0" colour graphic display with album artwork, the supplied BRM-1 intelligent remote control and the MOONLink system for coordination with other MOON components.
The measured figures confirm the design approach: 125 dB signal-to-noise ratio in the analogue preamplifier, 125 dB dynamic range on the digital input, −125 dB crosstalk, THD+N of 0.0003 % and intermodulation distortion of 0.00006 %. Frequency response extends from 2 Hz to 200 kHz (+0 / −3 dB) and the 50 Ω output impedance drives power amplifiers effortlessly. The massive chassis with the MDB (MOON Damping Base) anti-vibration base and a weight of 25 kg limits the transfer of mechanical vibration into sensitive circuits.
