MOON 861: dual-mono power amplifier with MDCA architecture and 300 W per channel of headroom
The MOON 861 is a stereo power amplifier from the North Collection, built on the design principles of the reference MOON 888. It works in a dual-mono configuration and delivers 300 W per channel into 8 ohms, 600 W into 4 ohms and 800 W in mono mode. At the heart of the signal path lies the MDCA (MOON Distortion-Cancelling Amplifier) architecture, complemented by a design without global feedback and proprietary MOON transistors, resulting in THD+N figures of 0.001 % at 300 W into 8 ohms.
Power is supplied by two custom low-noise toroidal transformers rated at 1500 VA and 228,000 µF of filter capacitance, which covers dynamic peaks without any voltage sag. The analogue circuits are physically separated, magnetic shielding is reinforced and the internal board layout minimises capacitive coupling between sections. Thermal stability is handled by side-mounted heatsinks that maintain even heat dissipation even under prolonged load.
A high damping factor of 900 allows precise control over the movement of bass driver cones, so transients remain fast and uncompressed. A signal-to-noise ratio of 119 dB and crosstalk of –119 dB contribute to clearly readable instrument placement and a stable stereo image, while the frequency response of 2 Hz – 100 kHz (+0 / –3 dB) preserves a neutral tonal character with no emphasised bands. The amplifier remains absolutely stable even with demanding loudspeaker impedance curves.
The rear panel offers both RCA and XLR inputs, a stereo/mono switch and a MOONLink port for coordinated power-up with MOON preamplifiers. Consumption in low-power mode is 1.25 W, and full-power standby is available for instant readiness. Input sensitivity of 1.4 V, input impedance of 47 kΩ and 31 dB of gain allow integration into a wide range of systems; its natural partner is the MOON 891 network player and preamplifier.
