The MOON 681 is a network player and DAC designed as a complete digital front end for any analogue amplifier. It combines the MiND 2 streaming platform, the MDE1 digital core and MHV (MOON Hybrid Volume) level control, so it can drive a power amplifier directly without a separate preamplifier. It supports high resolutions including PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD256 via USB Audio as well as MiND 2.
The design is built around a fully balanced internal layout, which together with MDE1 and MHV keeps signal processing free of added noise and distortion. The measured figures bear this out: signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range both 125 dB, crosstalk "-125 dB, THD+N 0.0003 % at 0 dBFS and intermodulation distortion 0.0002 %. Frequency response extends from 2 Hz to 100 kHz (+0 / "-3 dB).
Connectivity includes six digital inputs comprising AES/EBU, USB Audio, optical and coaxial, plus HDMI ARC. The analogue output is available on both RCA and XLR, with fixed and variable level (2 Vrms / 3.5 Vrms / 6.5 Vrms) and an analogue section input impedance of 50 \u03a9. MOONLink integration allows coordinated control with other MOON components, for example the 641 integrated amplifier.
The network section works natively with TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer and Spotify, the unit is Roon Ready and supports Qobuz Connect, TIDAL Connect, Spotify Connect, AirPlay and Bluetooth aptX. Operating status is shown on a 4.3-inch colour graphic display with album artwork, format, source and playback status; control is rounded off by the intelligent BRM-1 remote. Power consumption in eco standby mode is 5 W while retaining instant responsiveness.
