MOON 610LP – fully balanced dual-mono phono preamplifier with extensive cartridge loading options
The MOON 610LP is a phono preamplifier built around a dual-mono, fully balanced differential circuit whose design derives from the reference MOON 810LP. A purist approach to the signal path is combined with exceptionally wide adjustment options, allowing the unit to be precisely matched to virtually any MM or MC cartridge. Both a balanced XLR input and a single-ended RCA input are available, one pair of each type.
The power supply uses voltage regulation with i²DCf (Independent Inductive DC Filtering) technology, where a separate choke is dedicated to each integrated circuit in the signal path – 24 stages in total. This separation of filtering reduces interaction between individual circuits and contributes to a very low noise floor. The circuits use custom-made metallised polypropylene film capacitors with 1 % tolerance. The preamplifier is also fully compatible with the external MOON 820S power supply.
Cartridge matching is handled via DIP switches: there are 64 impedance loading values from 12.1 Ω to 47 kΩ, 16 capacitive loading values from 0 pF to 1120 pF and 16 gain settings from 40 dB to 70 dB. RIAA and IEC equalisation curves are also selectable, with the IEC filter applying -7 dB at 10 Hz to limit subsonic disturbances from warped records. Accurate cartridge loading has a direct influence on the linearity of the frequency response and on the resolution of the treble band.
The measured figures confirm the character of the design: frequency response 20 Hz – 20 kHz ±0.1 dB, THD 0.001 %, intermodulation distortion 0.002 % and crosstalk -106 dB at 1 kHz. Signal-to-noise ratio reaches 112 dBr at 40 dB gain and 93 dBr at 70 dB. High input overload margin together with a low 50 Ω output impedance contributes to stable dynamics, precise instrument localisation and a presentation in which only the noise of the recording itself remains audible.
